Essential Guide for Diabetics on Business Trips: How to Manage Blood Sugar and Travel Safely

2026-02-27

Before a business trip, thorough preparation is essential: Long-distance business trips are common for many diabetic patients. It's important to note that travel inevitably disrupts established routines. This shouldn't be a reason to abandon or break your habits; the key is for patients to learn how to manage their diet and daily routine appropriately during these changes and adhere to their medication regimen.

Before departure, diabetic patients should ideally visit a hospital to assess their blood sugar levels and determine if they are suitable for long journeys. A doctor can provide necessary travel guidance. It's best to travel with a companion and inform them of your condition. This will help them know what to do in an emergency. When traveling alone, never forget to carry your diabetes treatment card, which should include your name, address, home phone number, type of diabetes, the name and dosage of your current blood sugar-lowering medication. This will allow for timely medical intervention in case of an emergency. Pack extra medications, such as oral hypoglycemic agents, insulin, syringes, needles, and blood glucose test strips. Store insulin properly in a cool, dark place between 4 and 25°C. Airplane baggage is typically kept at sub-zero temperatures, so do not store insulin in it, as it can easily crystallize, rendering it unusable. When traveling abroad, ensure that the insulin concentration is the same locally as in your home country; do not mix up the concentrations. Additionally, carry medication for nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever, and take it as prescribed. When traveling far from towns, carry bottled water or a hydration cup and drink promptly when thirsty to prevent hyperosmolar coma. Maintain your regular eating habits as much as possible. If you must postpone a meal, eat a small snack first. Patients with blood glucose monitors should carry them with them and monitor their blood sugar regularly. To prevent hypoglycemia, carry some fruit candy and take it immediately if symptoms such as palpitations, cold sweats, tremors, dizziness, or weakness occur. If symptoms do not improve after taking the candy, seek medical attention at the nearest hospital.
