What factors lead to high blood pressure?

Many people believe that most cases of high blood pressure are caused by genetics, but this is not the case. Statistics show that there are over 200 million people with high blood pressure in my country, but only 20%–30% are related to genetics; 70%–80% are caused by unhealthy lifestyle habits. Once these unhealthy lifestyle factors are controlled, many people with high blood pressure will experience varying degrees of improvement, or even return to normal. What unhealthy lifestyle habits or physical conditions can lead to high blood pressure?

1. Obesity
Statistics show that one in two to three people in my country is obese. Obesity is often accompanied by abnormal blood lipids and metabolic disorders, which are common factors causing high blood pressure. Obesity not only significantly increases the risk of high blood pressure but also greatly increases the risk of other diseases.

2. Alcohol abuse
The effect of alcohol on blood pressure is closely related to the amount and timing of alcohol consumption. Generally speaking, occasional small amounts of alcohol can dilate blood vessels and lower blood pressure; however, long-term heavy drinking can excite the sympathetic nervous system, causing peripheral arteriolar constriction and leading to high blood pressure. Statistics show that 5% to 10% of hypertension patients develop the disease due to excessive alcohol consumption. Long-term alcohol consumption increases the risk of elevated systolic blood pressure by 32% and diastolic blood pressure by 55%.

3. Mental Stress: A fast-paced lifestyle and increased work pressure leave many people in a state of chronic stress and anxiety. This leads to increased release of vasoconstrictors such as endothelin and catecholamines, causing small artery spasms and resulting in hypertension.

4. Smoking: Tobacco smoke contains over 7,000 chemical substances, including 69 known carcinogens. Long-term smokers have a 25% increased risk of hypertension and a 3 times increased risk of death.

5. Lack of Exercise: Studies show that lack of physical activity and a sedentary lifestyle increase the risk of hypertension by 38%, a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

6. High-Salt Diet: The average daily salt intake in my country is over 9 grams, far exceeding the WHO's recommended daily intake (below 5 grams). High sodium intake increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality.

Therefore, for all hypertension patients, the key to treatment is improving unhealthy lifestyle habits. Regardless of your type of hypertension or how high your blood pressure is, lifestyle modifications are the cornerstone of lowering blood pressure. These modifications include weight control, reducing salt intake, regular exercise, stress reduction, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol consumption. With lifestyle improvements, you may not need to take as much blood pressure medication, or you may even be able to stop taking it altogether.
