Sleep Hygiene Guidelines for Hypertension Patients: Five Tips to Help Stabilize Blood Pressure

2026-03-03

Hypertensive patients should pay attention to sleep hygiene: Hypertension is very common, and its most serious health hazard is the risk of stroke due to elevated blood pressure, which often occurs at night. Therefore, hypertensive patients should arrange their rest and sleep properly and pay attention to the following points:

(1) Midday nap: Hypertensive patients who have worked all morning should take a short nap after lunch, after some light activity. A nap of half an hour to one hour is generally recommended, and older patients can extend it by half an hour. If lying flat is not possible, they can sit on a sofa with their eyes closed to relax their whole body, which is beneficial for lowering blood pressure.

(2) Light dinner: Older people generally pay more attention to dinner, which should be light and not too much. Some middle-aged hypertensive patients do not care about dinner and sometimes eat and drink excessively without restraint, leading to increased gastrointestinal burden, affecting sleep, and hindering blood pressure reduction. Dinner should consist of easily digestible foods, with some soup. Don't be afraid to drink water or eat porridge at night for fear of frequent urination. Insufficient water intake can make the blood thicker at night, promoting thrombosis. (3) Moderate Entertainment: It is crucial for patients with hypertension to limit pre-sleep entertainment activities. Activities such as chess, mahjong, and poker should be limited to 1-2 hours. Patients should learn to control their emotions, focusing on recreation and fitness rather than being overly concerned with winning or losing, or becoming overly serious or excited. Otherwise, blood pressure may rise. Television viewing time should also be controlled; prolonged sitting in front of the screen and watching overly stimulating programs can disrupt sleep.

(4) Foot Bath Before Bed: Maintain a regular bedtime routine and develop the habit of soaking your feet in warm water before bed, followed by massaging the soles of your feet to promote blood circulation and relieve fatigue. Minimize or avoid using sleeping pills, striving for natural sleep and avoiding dependence on them. (5) Get up slowly: Upon waking in the morning, do not rush to get out of bed. First, lie on your back and move your limbs and neck, stretching to allow the muscles and smooth muscles of your limbs to regain appropriate tension, adapting to the change in posture upon waking and avoiding dizziness. Then, slowly sit up, move your upper limbs a few times, and then get out of bed. This will prevent significant fluctuations in blood pressure.

For hypertensive patients, adhering to the above points while taking antihypertensive medication on time will improve the effectiveness of antihypertensive treatment, maintain stable blood pressure, and thus reduce the chance of stroke.
