Frequent Hydration is Key: Diabetic patients should drink plenty of water. This helps dilute high blood sugar and increases urine output, allowing sugar to be excreted through urine. In other words, drinking more water is a self-protective measure for the body. Intentionally drinking too little water can lead to blood concentration, preventing the excretion of excess blood sugar and nitrogenous waste products, potentially causing serious consequences. Dehydration is common among the elderly and easily overlooked. As organ function declines and sensation dulls, the elderly are less sensitive to thirst than healthy individuals. Dehydration can lead to decreased blood volume, causing symptoms such as dizziness and memory loss. Oliguria reduces the excretion of metabolic waste, and urine retention can easily lead to urinary tract infections and heatstroke in summer. Insufficient digestive fluid secretion can cause loss of appetite, abdominal distension, indigestion, and constipation. Hemoconcentration and increased blood viscosity can lead to higher blood sugar levels or the development of diseases such as coronary heart disease and cerebral thrombosis.
Elderly diabetic patients should pay attention to the following points to prevent dehydration in summer:
(1) Drink before thirst: Regardless of whether they are thirsty, the elderly should drink 1000-1500 ml of water daily. They should increase their water intake when their activity level increases, they sweat more, they have a fever, or they experience vomiting or diarrhea.
(2) Drink water at appropriate times and in appropriate amounts: Drink water every morning and before bedtime, and after physical activity to replenish lost fluids. Avoid drinking large amounts of water half an hour before and after meals, and during meals. Each water intake should be controlled at 250-300 ml, divided into 2-3 servings. Do not drink too much water at once, as this can cause other complications. (3) Drink plenty of plain water: Plain water does not contain preservatives, pigments, sugars and other substances.
