How can patients with hypertension stabilize their blood pressure by improving sleep quality?

2026-02-28

Improving Sleep Quality: Sleep directly affects the blood pressure levels of patients with hypertension, so high-quality sleep is crucial. This requires patients with hypertension to pay attention to the following:

(1) Take a nap at noon. On the one hand, this is due to the fatigue of a morning's work; on the other hand, a nap after lunch is beneficial for nutrient absorption. The nap should generally last from half an hour to one hour, and older people can extend it by half an hour. If lying flat is not possible, one can sit on a sofa, close their eyes, and relax, which is also beneficial for lowering blood pressure.

(2) Eat a light dinner. Dinner should be light and small. Avoid overeating and drinking without restraint, as this can burden the gastrointestinal system, affect sleep, and hinder blood pressure reduction. Dinner should consist of easily digestible foods, along with some soup. Don't be afraid to drink water or porridge because of frequent urination at night. Insufficient water intake can thicken the blood at night, promoting thrombosis.

(3) Moderate entertainment. Limit time spent playing chess, mahjong, or cards, generally to 1-2 hours. At the same time, it's important to learn to control emotions, focusing on entertainment and fitness rather than being overly concerned with winning or losing, which can lead to excessive seriousness or excitement and cause high blood pressure. Television viewing time should also be controlled, avoiding overly stimulating programs, as these can disrupt sleep.

(4) Soak feet before bed. Soaking feet in warm water before bed and then massaging the soles can promote blood circulation and relieve fatigue. Try to fall asleep naturally, minimizing or avoiding the use of sleeping pills to prevent dependence.

(5) Get up slowly. After urinating or defecating at night or waking up in the morning, do not get up immediately. Lie on your back in bed first, moving your limbs and neck to restore appropriate tension in the muscles and blood vessels, adapting to the change in posture upon waking and avoiding dizziness. Then slowly sit up, moving your upper limbs slightly before getting out of bed. This helps prevent significant fluctuations in blood pressure.

If you can consistently adhere to these points, patients with hypertension will surely enjoy high-quality sleep, thus increasing their strength in fighting hypertension.
