Winter melon

High in potassium, low in sodium, lowers blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol

Also known as white melon, pillow melon, and winter melon.

Taste and properties: Sweet and cool in nature; enters the lung, large intestine, small intestine, and bladder meridians. Recommended daily intake: 100-500 grams.

Nutritional components: Protein, sugar, crude fiber, ash, carotene, thiamine, riboflavin, malonic acid, niacin, vitamin C, calcium, phosphorus, iron, etc.

Benefits in lowering blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol: Winter melon is high in potassium and low in sodium, making it an ideal food for patients with kidney disease, diabetes, hypertension, and edema who require a low-sodium diet. The malonic acid it contains effectively inhibits the conversion of carbohydrates into fat, and the niacin can lower blood cholesterol levels, thus having a weight-loss and lipid-lowering effect.

Remedies:

1. Diabetes: One winter melon. Gently scrape off the white frost on the winter melon skin with a glass or similar object. Use a small amount, about the size of a bullet, each time. 1. For severe and persistent symptoms, take twice daily for 2-3 days; for mild symptoms, one or two doses may suffice. Clears heat and moistens dryness, tonifies the kidneys and astringes. Suitable for dry mouth, thirst, excessive drinking, and frequent urination.

2. For hypertension, liver yang hyperactivity, headache, and blurred vision: 500g winter melon, 250g carp head.

◆Steamed Winter Melon Soup

Ingredients: Cooked winter bamboo shoots, rehydrated shiitake mushrooms, mushrooms
Seasonings: Sesame oil, cooking wine, soy sauce, MSG, sugar, and starch (appropriate amounts).

Instructions: 1. Select a thick section of the winter melon and use a round-grooved knife to carve 14 cylindrical holes. Blanch and coat with sesame oil.

2. Wash shiitake mushrooms and button mushrooms, peel bamboo shoots, and finely chop them. Heat oil in a wok to 60% heat and stir-fry the mushrooms. Add cooking wine, soy sauce, sugar, MSG, and shiitake mushrooms. Bring the broth to a boil, thicken with cornstarch, and let cool to form the filling.

3. Hollow out winter melon slices, fill with the filling, place on a plate, steam for 10 minutes, remove and plate. Bring the remaining broth in the plate to a boil, season, thicken with cornstarch, and pour over the winter melon slices.

Dried Shrimp and Winter Melon:

Seasonings: 5g each of scallions and ginger, 4g salt, 3g chicken powder, 20ml cornstarch, 2ml sesame oil, vegetable oil, pepper, and cooking wine (as needed).

Instructions:
1. Peel the winter melon and cut into 5cm long strips.

2. Soak dried shrimp in water until softened.

3. Heat a little oil in a pot, add scallions, ginger, and dried shrimp and sauté until fragrant. Add winter melon, cooking wine, salt, chicken powder, and pepper. Add a little water to adjust the seasoning. Simmer until the winter melon is soft and the broth is thick. Thicken with a little cornstarch slurry and drizzle with sesame oil.


Loofah contains B vitamins and other components that prevent skin aging. It can protect the skin, eliminate blemishes, and make the skin white and delicate, making it a rare beauty product. Therefore, loofah juice is known as "beauty water." The juice of loofah vines has a special effect on maintaining skin elasticity and can beautify and reduce wrinkles. Loofah extract has a significant preventive effect against Japanese encephalitis virus, and a substance with anti-allergic properties has also been extracted from loofah tissue culture fluid.


Loofah contains saponins, which can cleanse the blood and improve blood circulation. It can bind cholesterol in the intestines into a mixture that is not easily absorbed and excrete it from the body, thereby lowering cholesterol. Loofah can also dilate blood vessels, which is beneficial for lowering blood pressure. The citrulline contained in loofah can balance normal blood sugar levels.

 

Effective Remedies

1. Diabetes: Slice 200g of loofah, boil until cooked, then steep with 3g of black tea. Drink one hour after meals, three times daily.

2. Migraine: Boil 90g of fresh loofah root and 2 duck eggs in water and drink.

3. Dysentery: Mix 15ml of loofah juice with 15g each of brown and white sugar and drink.

4. Chest and rib pain: Burn dried, old loofah until charred, grind into powder, mix with warm wine, and take 10g each time.

1. *Compendium of Materia Medica*: "When burned to ash and taken by the elderly, it dispels wind and phlegm, cools the blood, detoxifies, kills parasites, unblocks meridians, promotes blood circulation, and increases lactation."

2. *Seeking Truth in Materia Medica*: "Loofah is cold in nature, sweet in taste, and slippery in texture. It is effective for those suffering from wind-phlegm, damp-heat, parasitic toxins, blood stasis, stagnation in the meridians, causing carbuncles, sores, metrorrhagia, intestinal bleeding, edema, etc., because it unblocks meridians and reaches everywhere."

◆Stir-fried Loofah with Two Kinds of Mushrooms
Main Ingredients: 50g enoki mushrooms, 20g dried shiitake mushrooms, 60g loofah.

Seasonings: Soy sauce, sugar, salt, starch, vegetable oil (appropriate amounts).

Instructions:
1. Wash and slice the loofah, blanch it in water, cool it, then stir-fry it in a small amount of oil until cooked, add salt to taste, and set aside.

2. Soak the dried shiitake mushrooms until soft, remove the stems. Stir-fry them in a small amount of oil. Add soy sauce and sugar and simmer for 3 minutes. 3. Wash the enoki mushrooms and cook them together with the shiitake mushrooms. When the broth has reduced slightly, thicken it with cornstarch, then serve in the center of the loofah.
