A Comprehensive Analysis of Blood Glucose Management: From Definition to Diabetes Control Goals and Influencing Factors
Pay Attention to Blood Sugar, High Blood Sugar, and Diabetes
Blood Sugar Basics in a Simple Way
What is Blood Sugar: Our activities require energy, and as energy sources, we need carbohydrates, fats, and proteins every day.
Check Your Blood Sugar Level:
The three main energy-providing nutrients. The primary source of energy is glucose, converted from food. Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose in the digestive organs, absorbed by the small intestine, and enter the bloodstream via the liver. The glucose in the blood is called blood sugar.
Reference Table for Diabetes Treatment Control Targets (Mainly Type 2)
Control Indicators Good Fair Poor
Glucose (mmol/L) Fasting 4.4~~6.1 ≤7.0 >7.0
Glucose (mmol/L) Non-fasting 4.4~8.0 ≤10.0 >10.0
Glycated Hemoglobin (%) <6.5 6.5~7.5 >7.5
Blood Pressure (mmHg) <(130/80) >(130/80)
<(140/90) >(140/90)
Body Mass Index (Male) <25 <27 ≥27
Body Mass Index (Female) <24 <26 ≥26
Total Cholesterol (mmol/L) <4.5 ≥4.5 ≥6.0
High-Density Lipoprotein >1.1 1.1~0.9 <0.9
Triglycerides (mmol/L) <1.5
<2.2
≥2.2 Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (mmol/L) <2.5 2.5~4.0 >4.0
What affects your blood sugar: Insulin is a substance secreted by the beta cells of the pancreas. Insulin is a small protein with a wide range of functions in the body, primarily lowering blood sugar. It also helps in the synthesis of fats and proteins. Insulin deficiency leads to diabetes. Insulin deficiency is divided into absolute deficiency and relative deficiency. Absolute insulin deficiency can lead to type 1 diabetes, mainly because glucose cannot be utilized, thus causing elevated blood sugar. Relative insulin deficiency can lead to type 2 diabetes. In addition, genetic factors can also lead to decreased pancreatic function, resulting in reduced insulin secretion and thus elevated blood sugar.
For insulin to act effectively on glucose, insulin receptors in cells are crucial. However, due to unbalanced diets, overeating, and insufficient exercise, insulin receptors in cells cannot function properly. Even if insulin secretion is not a problem, insulin cannot function normally, reducing its effectiveness and leading to hyperglycemia and diabetes. This condition is called insulin resistance.
